Shock Value Pre Race & Members Stalls Area

Shock Value: Ready for tomorrow, this horse has a very good weight advantage on 3 horses he has met, No. Outlandish Lad, 6. Stratcombe and 10. Verdasco. The voice track from David Hayes is attached.
Plenty of pace in the race and it is a ‘hot race’ as they say with many chances, our horse should be able to settle 4th in the run and with 54kg he should be in the finish. He had 13 runs in the last preparation and is in for the long haul over Summer. He missed the start slightly in his trial, race day he has a handler in the gates with him, it will be the case tomorrow.
Chances are 6-4-11-13-2.

For the first time members for tomorrow, dress code for men in the members and mounting yard is jacket and tie.
We will be obtaining mounting yard tickets and they will be handed out at the horse stall area around 30 mins prior to the race which is scheduled for 5.20. Fay from our office will be at the horse stall area from 4.15pm.
Your BMRC card won’t gain you admission tomorrow, Sat are always difficult.
I will be calling for SEN tomorrow and hope to see you briefly before the race.

BMRC Comment – Damien Oliver

Several members have asked me to comment on the Damien Oliver inquiry which was completed today.

Damien Oliver has been stood down for 10 months, he will not be able to ride in races or trackwork for the first 8 months, then in September 2013 he can resume riding back in time for the Spring of 2013.

He has admitted to committing the 2 deadly sins of racing as a licensed jockey.

He bet on a horse the favourite in a race at Monee Valley 2 years ago and he bet on a horse in a race where he rode the 2nd favourite.

I rate Oliver as along with Darren Beadman as the best 2 riders in the nation in the past 30 years.
Oliver in an emotional plea today spoke of the dark period in his life around 2010/2011, his wife had left with his children he was living alone he had self doubt and he turned to the bottle, he stated he was in a dark place.
He stated today before stewards that on the spur of the moment at the Moonee Valley races that particular night he phoned a pro punter and had 10K on the favourite Miss Octopussy while he was riding in the race on the 2nd pick Europia Point, it was always well back where Miss Octopussy jumped to the lead and was never headed.
Oliver’s gain was 11K for backing the winner.

My question is:
Did I get a real run for my money if I backed or owned Europia Point, stewards say they had no problem with the ride.
Yes, emotionally he was going through a very rough patch, there were some very nasty rumours circulating about off track activities which involved the police at the time which placed his marriage on the point of collapse.

How does someone just jump on the phone in the jockeys area and say put 10K on the favourite out of nowhere?

How do you suddenly have the pro punter’s number in your phone?

Then you tell the inquiry panel, this was a one off bet never done before and never done it since.
A similar offence in the jurisdiction of Hong Kong racing would see you behind bars, ask Chris Munce and he was only tipping. Jim Cassidy was caught doing the same a few years back in Sydney and the stewards said: 18 months for you Jimbo!

Does Oliver or anyone else who is or has gone down the same line realise the damage done to all aspects of the sport as far as the integrity issue is concerned. Racing’s image has been trashed. Our racing thrives on the faith of all fans/punters/owners and participants and this decision and sentence undermines everything that we in the sport believe in and strive for.

Racing Victoria today had their best chance ever at sending a clear message to any who want to play unfairly but sadly they fell at the last hurdle.
